George Church’s General Blacksmith shop on Main Street in Crosby. Notice the date on the top centre building stone is 1897. This image features one of Pennock’s signature techniques – a careful staging of people across the scene that manages to look causal and natural. The well-dressed gentleman at the left of the group seems out of step with everyone else. Perhaps he is a prominent person in the town.
The two young ladies seated on the wagon at the left appear curiously out of place with this cast of locals. Whether a sign of the times, or more of Pennock’s subtleties, only the young boys have removed and are holding their hats.
