Photograph of the original Peace Tower in Ottawa taken prior to the devastating fire of 1916. Note the delicate and ornate top of the original tower, looking distinctly different from today’s replacement structure.
Note the distinction of the columns and windows on the left accentuated by the shadow of the tower. The darkened entrance to the tower seems to be inviting the lone figure in the foreground to approach and enter.
Although Pennock was based in Elgin, he travelled widely throughout South Crosby and beyond. The Rideau Lakes Navigation Company ran steamers from Clayton N.Y. to Kingston, and then up the Rideau Canal to Ottawa. We know that Pennock made several trips to Ottawa to photograph there.
